After police issue a warning, the firefighters turn their hoses on the rioters, leading to more fighting and arrests.

This might prompt one to ask themselves if Sal is a racist then why does he own a restaurant in the middle of a black neighborhood. The film ends with two quotations expressing different views about violence, one from Martin Luther King and one from Malcolm X, before fading to a photograph of them shaking hands.

The murder is supposed to be a tragedy, meant to provoke outrage in the audience. Mookie literally delivers pizza, yes, but he also acts as a mediator between the two races.

Here Sal again relies on Mookie to smooth things over so this boycott really does not happen. Later in the movie we learn that Sal did in fact build his pizzeria by himself from the ground up, brick by brick, board by board which was no little task indeed.

Whatever problems there are with the content, Do the Right Thing is still great film-making. Mookie demands his weekly pay, leading to an argument. At the end when Mookie goes to get his wages from Sal we learn that it is not the money aspect of the loss that bothers Sal it is the fact that Sal lost something that was really a part of him.

While Radio Raheem is choking Sal, the police arrive. But the entire neighborhood is featured as the film intercuts between various exchanges, many of them tinged with racial overtones: Mookie and Jade sit on the curb, watching in disbelief.

Only Radio Raheem and Smiley support him. Mookie works as the delivery man for Sal in this movie. Because of this, Pino is at odds with both his father, who refuses to leave the increasingly African-American neighborhood, and his younger brother Vito Richard Edsonwho is friendly with Mookie.
